Welcome to the Fiftieth Anniversary homepage of English Language and Literature at the University of Waterloo

The June 4th debate between Barry Brummett and Christopher Hitchens via video-link was an enormous success. The Department thanks Christopher Hitchens, Barry Brummett, moderator Jian Ghomeshi, and everyone from far and near who came to hear the two debaters.

When the Department first opened its doors in September 1960, just sixty students were enrolled in the inaugural year of the Arts and Sciences program. Today, you may be one of over 5,000 alumni, 86 faculty, 500 current undergraduate, and 110 graduate students connected in the past and the present to Waterloo English on the main campus, at St. Jerome’s University, or at Renison, Conrad Grebel, and St. Paul’s University Colleges. The site is the portal to English as it was and is at Waterloo. We hope that you will help make it a living archive of stories about its past and its present. Please check back often to see what’s new and how you can participate in the Department’s celebrations.
